JaxbyJax serves as a living link between the contemporary voices of Northeast Florida and their literary forebears—Harriett Beecher Stowe (Uncle Tom’s Cabin) who wintered in Mandarin in the 1860s, James Weldon Johnson (Lift Every Voice and Sing), Zora Neale Hurston ((Their Eyes Were Watching God), Stetson Kennedy (Southern Exposure), and Madeleine L’Engle (A Wrinkle in Time) —who, as the granddaughter of Barnett Bank founder Bain Barnett, lived in Riverside on the shores of the St. Johns River for a few years as a teen.

This annual event, now in its 9th year, will be held at the Jessie Ball duPont Center, 40 E. Adams Street, on October 28 and 29, 2022. Dozens of writers and student writers, selected by an anonymous panel of established writers and writing instructors, will read selections from their recent work. At the request of our fiscal agent, 904WARD, and our presenting partners, The Jessie Ball duPont Center and Moving the Margins, this year judges will be looking for work highlighting its current artistic focus on the Past, Present, and Future of Jacksonville.

Founded by FSCJ professor/historian Tim Gilmore and his wife, professor Jo Carlisle, JaxbyJax is now co-directed by Darlyn Kuhn, a Jacksonville native whose novel, Sewing Holes, is loosely based on her own childhood growing up on the Trout River during the Vietnam War.

Being selected for JaxbyJax is a significant honor for our writers. Several of our past writers have gone on to be recognized, both nationally and internationally, for excellence in their fields. Five JaxbyJax alums were recently selected to be featured voices, immortalized in steel, as part of These Truths, a sculpture commissioned from California Sculptor Cliff Garten (I Am a Man Plaza in Memphis, among others) for the Duval County Courthouse.

This year we are hoping that you will join us.
